Move-In Information

Face Covering/Masks: Face masks, face shields, or face coverings are required anytime one, student or visitor, is walking through the halls, occupying common spaces, and entering or exiting the residence halls, as these spaces do not always allow for social distancing to be observed.

Drop-Off Days: Between Tuesday-Friday of the week before move-in week, August 11th-14th, the Residence Life office is providing students with the unique opportunity to sign up for a time to drop off their stuff early. The purpose of offering an early drop-off week is to help limit the number of people moving in on the high traffic check-in days. Participating in early drop-off week is completely optional but is highly encouraged, especially if the student lives within a three-hour radius of campus. Further information, including the sign-up process and drop-off policies and procedures, will be available on the housing website and sent to all new and returning residential students via McMurry email soon.

New Student Check-In/Move-In: New Student Check-In Day is mandatory for all new students, including transfer students. Students who live closer than three hours away are asked to check in from 9:00 am-12:00 pm, and students who live further than three hours away may check in from 1:00 pm-4:00 pm. This helps to accommodate for social distancing, both in the check-in line and in the residence halls. Students new to McMurry will receive an email regarding the check-in/move in process to their McMurry email soon.

Returner Move-In: Returner move-in is Saturday, August 22-Sunday, August 23. Returners will be asked to reserve a time slot for move-in to ensure staff availability and allow all to practice social distancing. Students will receive a link to sign up via email.

Cleaning and Sanitizing During Move-Ins: The Residence Life staff, cleaning staff, and Orientation Leaders will frequently wipe down surfaces throughout days when there will be more traffic in the residence halls. This includes drop-off and move-in days. There will also be hand-sanitizing stations at the entrances of the buildings so that students and guests helping with the move-in process may sanitize their hands upon entering and/or leaving the building.

Early Move-In for Fall Sports and Band/Drumline: If you participate in a fall sport or are in band/drumline, you will receive an email detailing the early check-in/move-in process very soon.

Updated Housing Policies for 2020-2021*

On-Campus Residential Commitment to Safety: In addition to their lease, all students who live on campus will be required to read, sign, and adhere to an On-Campus Residential Commitment to Safety Covenant, which will be inserted in each student’s move-in packet to be received in the residence hall on one’s move-in day.

Visitation: Off-campus visitors are not permitted in the residence halls at this time. Students will be able to bring two guests to help with the move-in process, but once the move-in process is complete, only students who live on campus are permitted in the residence halls. On-campus guests of the opposite gender or of romantic nature must be signed in and accompanied at all times, and overnight stays for guests of the opposite gender or romantic nature are not allowed.

Use of Common Spaces and Kitchens: The lobbies are currently closed until further notice; however, the kitchen is open. There should be no more than two students in the kitchen at a time to accommodate social distancing. In addition, students will be encouraged to practice good hand hygiene and clean up after themselves by wiping down all surfaces with disinfecting supplies provided by the Residence Life staff before leaving the kitchen.

Residence Hall Programming: Programs within the residence halls may look a little different this year, but the Resident Advisors will be trained on how to offer fun, educational, and developmental programs for students in new and creative ways. Some of the fun programs offered in the spring semester after classes moved online included a virtual escape room, a game night, and a Netflix watching party. Residence Life staff have been hard at work to make sure students are able to stay safe and “connected” in the residence halls.

Campus Housing Plan

Dear Students and Parents

Many questions regarding campus living have been asked of campus leadership. We are leaving the decision of where you complete the semester, at your permanent address or campus residence, to you. Please stay where you feel the safest.

The McMurry campus continues to remain open, including residence halls, campus apartments, and the dining hall, to ensure our students have access to essential resources, such as housing, meal services, the Internet, and the Library. Faculty remain available for students who wish to return to campus to support the educational learning experience. Again, you are encouraged to stay where you feel the safest.

On-Campus Living During Remote Instruction

As always, our residents are our priority, and our goal is to make this transition during an uncertain time as smooth as possible. Thank you for your patience and cooperation as we work together to ensure the continued health and safety of the McMurry community. Student Affairs contact can be found here.

If you choose to remain in or return to your campus residence, the following policies will apply:

  • You may be required to relocate to another building on campus;
  • All Residence Life and Student Code of Conduct policies remain in effect;
  • All residential-common spaces will be closed for student use - laundry and kitchen will remain open;
  • No guests are allowed in the residence halls during this time; and
  • Dining and other campus facilities and services may operate on a limited schedule.

All students who choose to stay on campus or return to campus are required to complete the Remote Instruction On-Campus Stay Application.

If you are choosing to return to your permanent residence, we have developed temporary Residence Hall Move-out Procedures that allow us to adhere to social distancing protocols.

Move Out for Students Who Choose to Return to Permanent Residence

Three Move-Out Options Beginning March 19, 2020. All move-outs require appointments to allow us to adhere to social distancing protocols.

  • Immediate Move-out on or before March 29, 2020
    • Residents who indicate a preference for an Immediate Move-out must fill out the Immediate Move-out form that can be found here .
    • Students will be asked to designate a preferred move-out day and whether they prefer to move-out in the morning or afternoon.
    • They will also be asked to provide a phone number for use during the move-out process.
    • Once the form has been submitted, students will receive an email confirmation of the move-out date and assigned move-out time.
    • Students will then follow the Remote Move-out Process, outlined below, at their designated move-out time.
  • Early Move-out between March 30, 2020, and May 1, 2020
    • Residents who indicate a preference for an Early Move-out must fill out the Early Move-out form that can be found here .
    • Students will be asked to designate preferred move-out days, along with whether they prefer to move-out in the morning or afternoon.
    • They will also be asked to provide a phone number for use during the move-out process.
    • Once the form has been submitted, students will receive an email confirmation of the move-out date and assigned move-out time.
    • Students will then follow the Remote Move-out Process, outlined below, at their designated move-out time.
  • Traditional, End-of-Semester Move-out between May 2, 2020, and May 31, 2020
    • Since the situation with COVID-19 is a fluid one, students who indicate a preference for a traditional, end of semester move-out will receive communication regarding the process for that move out in mid-April.

Remote Move-out Process

  • On your designated move-out date, you will receive an email from your RD with a Move-out Checklist and a Room Condition form for your reference. In the email, you also will be reminded of your move-out time.
  • At your designated move-out time, you must be completely moved out and ready for the Residence Life staff member to do a walkthrough of your room. At that time, you will remove yourself from your hallway and wait for the Residence Life Staff member to contact you and do a virtual walkthrough of your room. If video calling is not an option for you, they will call you on whatever phone you have designated on the sign-up form and talk to you through the walkthrough. Pictures will be provided for any damage that they are documenting.
  • Once your virtual walkthrough is complete, you will turn your key in (if applicable) by placing it in a key envelope, labeling it with your room #, and dropping it into the designated vital drop. The Residence Life Staff Member will specify the location of the key envelopes and key drop during your walkthrough.
  • Once you have completed the move-out process, your card access will be turned off and access to the residence halls will end until we return for classes during the following term.
